Your Bright Spot

Safety Protocol

Your Bright Spot is a daily journaling and emotional wellness app for adults. This protocol explains how we approach user safety, what the app does and does not do, and where to find real help when needed.

If You Are in Crisis – Get Real Help Now

Your Bright Spot is not a crisis service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health emergency, contact a real person or emergency service now:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 in the United States. Free and available 24/7.
  • Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 in the United States. Free, text-based support available 24/7.
  • 911 or local emergency services: Call immediately if you or someone else is in immediate danger.
  • Outside the United States: Contact your local emergency number or a local crisis service.

Do not wait for an app or AI response during an emergency.

What Nova Is – and Is Not

Nova Is

  • Artificial intelligence, not a human being.
  • A private space for daily reflection and journaling.
  • A companion for everyday emotional support and self-care.
  • Designed for adults age 18 and older.

Nova Is Not

  • A licensed therapist, counselor, or mental health professional.
  • A medical provider or crisis line.
  • A substitute for professional mental health care.
  • Designed for or marketed to anyone under age 18.

Nova’s responses are generated by an AI language model. They may feel warm and attentive, but they are not clinical assessments, professional advice, or guaranteed-accurate information. Consult a qualified professional for mental health, medical, legal, financial, or other significant concerns.

Age Requirement

Your Bright Spot is intended for adults age 18 and older. We do not knowingly permit accounts for users under 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us using the information below.

How Our Safety Systems Work

Client-Side Crisis Detection

Your Bright Spot scans messages locally on the user’s device for phrases that may indicate a mental health crisis. When detected, the app surfaces crisis resources immediately, including 988, the Crisis Text Line, and 911.

Server-Side Crisis Detection

Our server independently scans messages using crisis keyword patterns. When a crisis signal is detected server-side, crisis resources may be included alongside Nova’s reply as an additional layer of detection.

System-Level Output Guidance

Nova’s AI instructions direct it not to encourage, validate, or provide instructions for self-harm or suicide. The instructions also prohibit sexually explicit content. These safeguards are intended to reduce harmful outputs, but no AI safeguard is a technical guarantee.

System Limitations

No AI companion can guarantee that every response will be safe or appropriate in every context. Nova cannot assess mental health risk, provide clinical intervention, or replace a trained crisis counselor. If you are in crisis, contact a real person or service.

When to Seek Professional Help

Your Bright Spot is designed for everyday emotional wellness, not for managing serious mental health conditions. Please contact a licensed professional if you experience:

  • Thoughts of suicide or self-harm.
  • Persistent depression or anxiety.
  • Symptoms of psychosis or dissociation.
  • Difficulty functioning at work or in relationships.
  • Substance use that feels out of control.
  • Trauma symptoms that interfere with daily life.
